Independent and responsible journalism is the real backbone of democracy. May 3 is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day all over the world. This day is not only for journalists but for every conscious citizen, because free media is the lifeline of democracy.
Journalism is not only about reporting news, but also about searching for truth, raising voice against injustice and giving right direction to the society. The concept of “Fearless Writing, Fair Journalism” should not be just a slogan but should be translated into action. Although the flow of information has accelerated in today's digital age, distinguishing between truth and falsehood has become more important.
Freedom of the media means the right to present the truth without any coercion. But with this freedom comes responsibility. Misinformation, rumors or bias can create confusion in society. Therefore, journalists should perform their role with honesty, neutrality and sensitivity.
Today, many journalists have to take risks while presenting the truth. Sometimes they face political, social or economic pressure. Journalists who fearlessly stand up for the truth even in such situations are the true defenders of democracy.
We too must do our part as conscious citizens while respecting the fourth pillar of democracy 'Journalism'. It is everyone's responsibility to choose the right information, avoid rumors and support the truth.
